Removing the Kleshas That Hinder Practice & Growth
The Yoga Sutras describe five fundamental afflictions, or kleshas, that disturb the mind and limit our ability to live with clarity:
- Avidya - misunderstanding or ignorance of our true nature
- Asmita - ego-identification
- Raga - attachment
- Dvesha - aversion
- Abhinivesha - fear and clinging to life
Explore how these patterns appear in our thoughts, relationships and spiritual practice, and discover practical ways to recognise and gradually loosen their influence.
Sunday, 9 August 2026
How to Move from Tamas to Rajas to Sattva in Yoga
The yogic tradition explains the mind and nature through three qualities, known as the gunas:
- Tamas - inertia, heaviness and confusion
- Rajas - activity, restlessness and desire
- Sattva - clarity, balance and harmony
Learn how these qualities influence our energy, habits, emotions and choices, and explore practical ways to move from inertia to purposeful action, and from restlessness towards greater clarity and inner steadiness.
About Swami Brahmavidananda Saraswati ji
Swami Brahmavidananda Saraswati ji is a traditional and contemporary teacher of Vedanta and the Founder of Aarsha Vidya Foundation, based in Mumbai.
Having taught in Mumbai for more than 35 years, Swamiji has shared Vedantic wisdom with a wide range of people, including spiritual seekers, students, young people, professionals, and corporate groups in India and internationally.
Before dedicating himself fully to Vedanta, Swamiji worked as an engineer. He later completed an in-depth study of the Prasthanatrayi—the Bhagavad Gita, Upanishads and Brahma Sutras—at Sandeepany and was inspired by Swami Chinmayanandaji. He also spent seven years living a life of study and austerity in Rishikesh, where he continued his advanced Vedanta studies.
Swamiji is the founder of the Vedic Wisdom Festival, an annual global online festival that brings together traditional teachers and respected masters to share the vision of Vedic wisdom for a complete and meaningful life. He has also shared his teachings at forums including the World Yoga Festival in the UK and Indica Moksha.
Alongside Vedanta, Swamiji has practised martial arts, including Karate, the Shaolin tradition and Tai Chi Chuan. He has also worked with corporate and educational organisations on strategy, leadership and personal development.
